Back in the saddle

Well, I'm back.

Still on the antibiotics, but done with the painkillers, and the swelling has almost completely gone. Now, of course, I'd like some sort of medication to calm me down from the low-level fury arising from being knocked out of circulation for a week by just a fly-bite! (All right, so the cortisone reaction was a contributory factor, but the cleg started it...)

Thanks to everyone for the Get Well Soon, Hope You're Feeling Better messages.

I'm taking myself, a red Biro and a green Hi-liter off out of the way; the galley proofs for The Empty Chair have just arrived, and I'm going to copy-edit them for Diane. She'll have to go through them again to make sure there've been no hiccups in (for example) Rihannsu names, but for ordinary stuff, punctuation and the rest, I'm pretty good. Hey, forget the false modesty: I'm extremely good. I must have been a copy-editor in a past incarnation, because she claims I can be sitting on the far side of the room and still spot a spelling mistake on her monitor. Well, maybe not until I get new glasses or lasered eyes, but I can certainly see them on the TV, where they're becoming more frequent and careless – "Genghis Kahn and the Golden Hoard", anyone? (And no, the programme description did not refer to a great heap of treasure... Sigh.)

I found this, and it made me laugh; I hope it does the same for you. Jasper fforde's books look like something I'd enjoy.

As for the Guarniad's first - surely not? – encounter with Harry Potter fandom, as noted by Diane on her LJ; all that's required is to let Grissom and the CSI team loose on an event like the one described. I'm sure the writers of such an episode would treat HP-dom with the same open-minded fairness as they did with furries.

And the pig now landing at Heathrow airport is the BA Berkshire Boar from Malaga...

The horde/hoard confusion is one of my favourite errors; it creates such wonderful mental images. "Cavalry troupe" is even better, though. (I will be happy for hours, now, imagining a regiment of Hussars, on their horses, doing the can-can...)

Glad you're feeling better.

Not a regiment of Hussies?

Given what the Lipizzaners in the Spanish Riding School at Vienna can do right now, a Bob Fossey-style kick line doesn't seem so improbable.

(Though having seen a capriole, and knowing what its original function was, I use the term kick-line rather advisedly...)
