Still hanging in there...
Jul. 18th, 2007 03:47 pmI spoke to my sister Caroline earlier today and Mum had a more comfortable night, ate some breakfast and was having a bite of lunch; she was also bright enough to chat with the Rector when he popped in to see her. Of course all of this is no more than a tiny improvement, but after what we heard yesterday (as posted by Diane) Improvement is what it is.
All her nursing staff are lovely people, so much that I can't single out one in particular as having more nursey goodness than the others, so I'll give you this incident, which was quirky, nice in all the good ways, and once again proves that the world is smaller than you think.
It turned out quite unexpectedly that the husband (Dave) of one of the nurses (Colette) is a fan of some writer guy called Morwood...so once the name thing had been sorted out, I loaned him the draft copy of my latest story which I'd brought to work on, so squeaky-new the printout still has incomplete editorial changes all over it in red. He was very chuffed.
All of this pleased Mum a lot, since apart from a Christmas/New Year trip to Toronto, LA and Chicago in 1994 (the only time she's ever been beyond the British Isles) and to the subsequent Glasgow Worldcon in '95, she's never seen much evidence that people actually read what I write. I think having it happen so very locally yet so very out of the blue added an extra sparkle.
Thanks once again for all the kind words; you have no idea what they mean to Diane and I, and there'll be more personal responses in due course. Mum hasn't seen any of them, obviously, so if anyone feels like dropping a card or a note into the post, she's Mrs Doris Smyth, Ward 1b, Lagan Valley Hospital, Lisburn, Co. Antrim BT28 1JP, UK.
I've been very selfish this past weekend in my request for good wishes; spare a thought (many thoughts) for my family members who live much closer and are there for Mum each and every day: sister Caroline, brother-in-law David (who lost his own Mum very suddenly just at the end of June) and nephew Jason (supposed to be going on holiday next week, and now this.) It never rains but it pours.
Which is what it's doing right now. Summer? What summer? Waiting for any sort of news like this is always the hardest part, so though the weather continues intermittently foul, I think a walk in the fresh air will do us both good. At least the walls aren't as obvious.
