Movie musings...
Apr. 14th, 2007 09:35 pmAng Lee's Hulk was on TV the other night; I can't say I was actually watching it, more passing through the room often enough to notice the progression of plot (if that's what it was.) This means I'm about to express an opinion on something I haven't actually seen. ("And this is new in what way...?" comes the voice offstage.)
Was I missing something, or did the title character fail to appear in any identifiable form until about 40 minutes in? And (again, I might be missing something through lack of due attention) did this seem as odd to other viewers as it did to me? Just wondering...
Another movie on TV this week was one where the title character is present almost from the start, yet doesn't appear on-screen for even longer than old Greenskin. But it's much more difficult to ignore the shark's unseen presence in Jaws from the very first DUUH-dun. DUUH-dun. Dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-DUH-dun... (repeat until eaten or out of the water...)
I wonder how many times by now, if that film had been directed by George Lucas, it would have been given CGI make-overs to add more and more and more Visible Shark. And would it be any better as a result?
I don't think so.
OK, I'd like to see a revised version with the existing shark appearances replaced by something far better than clunky old Bruce, but that's all. No special effects can match what goes on inside the viewer's uncensorable imagination, and it's what you can't see that gets you...
