Mum, who's 90 but still determinedly living by herself in her own house, went into hospital a week ago because of breathlessness and fluid buildup in her legs. She was supposed to be out again by last Wednesday.

Instead she's still there, with what turns out to be congestive heart failure. The consultant, of course, was on holiday and won't be back till tomorrow.

I'm frightened.

It's alright to be frightened. My Mum was unwell for three months earlier this year and it scared me witless, there is so much wrong with her to start with, she's been on borrowed time for 20 years now.
I'm sure Diane and the interweb can fill you in on all the good drugs they can give her - hospital is currently the right place for her, it's no use her going home until they have her symptoms under control.
The consultant is back tomorrow, get to speak to him, get the straight dope on what they can do to help. Also, check with local authorities, they can be quite keen to keep people at home, you can get home helps and nurses who will visit daily.

Keep thinking positive.
You've got my email, if you want to talk, just let me know.
